Obituray of honorary member Steen Gammeltoft
Steen Gammeltoft grew up surrounded by science in a family of doctors. After graduating from medical school in 1967, Steen joined the laboratory of Jørgen Gliemann at Rigshospitalet and the University of Copenhagen to study insulin receptors. His research culminated in a doctoral thesis on insulin receptor kinetics and structure-function, which he completed in 1985. As an independent research leader, Steen broadened his scientific focus to growth factors and signal transduction. In 1993, he became a leading physician at the Department of Clinical Biochemistry at Glostrup Hospital, where he continued his research career until retirement. Beyond his scientific work, Steen was deeply committed to advancing Danish science. He was often among the first to welcome foreign scientists, generously offering guidance and support to help them navigate the Danish research culture and funding system. Steen was also widely recognized for his dedication to science communication. He mentored students, authored both scientific and popular science articles, and organized international meetings and courses—enthusiastically supporting and advising younger colleagues in these efforts as well. Steen played a central role in the Biokemisk Forening (Danish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), serving as its chairman from 1999 to 2014 and working actively in its board until his death. In 1997, Steen founded BioZoom, the society’s journal, to unite Danish biochemical scientists and to promote public engagement and outreach in biochemistry. Steen is survived by his three sons and several grandchildren and he is also deeply missed by many colleagues who are grateful for his guidance and friendship. Tuula Kallunki June 2025 |
