Travel Fellowships from the Danish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology – a door to the world of science

Publiceret Marts 2017

Become member of Danish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (DSBMB) and enjoy the members benefits. Young scientists can apply for 25 travel fellowships per year for conference participation and laboratory visits. All members have access to conferences and fellowships offered by the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB). Registration for DSBMB membership on http://www.biokemi.org/info/membership/

DSBMB travel fellowships

International travels to conferences and other laboratories are crucial for young scientists to discuss their results, to create a professional network and to learn new methods. A membership of the DSBMB, www.biokemi.org, gives young scientists access to travel fellowships for conference participation and laboratory visit. The DSMB awards 25 short-term travel fellowships per year. There are four annual deadlines for applications from master students, PhD students, and post docs. For travels outside Europe we award 5,000 DKK, whereas travels within Europe are granted with 3,000 DKK.

In addition, a special travel fellowship funds visits to conferences and laboratories at the world-famous Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) in Rehovot, Israel, www.weizmann.ac.il (Figure 1). This fellowship, jointly sponsored by the DSBMB and the WIS, covers travel, conference fee, and accommodation for 12,000 DKK. Read the report of the first recipient of the fellowship in this issue of BioZoom.

Simple application requirements

For application, the candidate has to provide information about the purpose of the travel (conference and lab visit), a CV, and a letter of motivation explaining how the fellowship will benefit the applicant’s career, as well as confirmed DSBMB membership. The travel fellowship committee of DSBMB will review the applications, and decide about the recipients, who will receive the grant. There is no need for a financial report after the travel. More information about the travel fellowships can be found on the DSBMB homepage.

FEBS and IUBMB conferences, courses and fellowships

A DSBMB membership in addition entitles to apply for fellowships from the FEBS, www.febs.org, and the IUBMB, www.iubmb.org. FEBS offer long- and short-term fellowships, summer fellowships, fellowships for participation at the annual FEBS congress, and a special grant for participation in the excellent FEBS Advances Courses, www.febs.org/our-activities/advanced-courses/2017advanced-courses/. The IUBMB gives support to a short-term visit to other laboratories, and participation in the triennial IUBMB congress.

Taken together, DSBMB offers several opportunities for young scientists to learn and become inspired. And it works, as one can see from a mail we received from a recent travel fellowship recipient: ”Thank you to the DSBMB for the support to my participation in the 2nd Functional DNA Nanotechnology Workshop in Rome, Italy, June 2016, www.fdn2016.com. I received a travel fellowship from DSBMB and would like to say thank you. I was lucky enough to win the poster prize for the best poster-presentation in the innovation category!”

We look forward to supporting many more successful young scientists from Danish research labs in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology.
